ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

About Katherine Schweit

Katherine Schweit is a lawyer and former FBI Executive who currently teaches law classes at DePaul and Webster universities. She is the author of the book, Stop the Killing: How to End the Mass Shootings Crisis, and co-hosts, with Sarah Ferris, the award nominated podcast, Stop the Killing. She served as a FBI Special Agent for 20 years, working both national security and criminal matters, a role she took on after serving as an assistant state's attorney in Chicago. 

When the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre occurred, she was assigned to create and run its active shooter program, authoring the FBI’s seminal research, A Study of 160 Active Shooter Incidents in the United States, 2000 – 2013. She is a longtime member of the faculty at DePaul College of Law and Webster University, and serves as an advisor to the National Center for School Safety. She is an expert in active shooters, mass shootings, and security policies and procedures. She currently owns Schweit Consulting LLC, providing leadership counseling, security advice to corporations, hospitals, religious organizations, educators, and government clients.

About Jaclyn Schildkraut, PhD

Jaclyn Schildkraut, PhD, is a national expert on school and mass shootings, and her work focuses on the effectiveness of policies aimed at prevention, mitigation, response, and recovery. 

Since 2018, she has conducted the largest study in the nation on the effects of lockdown drills on school participants and skill mastery, and she consults with school districts to help improve their emergency response plans. 

Schildkraut is the co-author of three books, including Lockdown Drills: Connecting Research and Best Practices for School Administrators, Teachers, and Parents (2022) and served as the editor for two additional volumes. She has published more than 30 scholarly articles on topics related to mass and school shootings, as well as school security. Schildkraut’s research and expertise are regularly sought after by local, national, and international news outlets.
